Shel’s Family

The first ever AfterCon Artshow took place on July 22nd , 23rd , and 24th 2010 at Suture Gallery in San Diego generating $1,810.00 for the Shel Dorf New Talent Encouragement Fund.

Comic-Con 2010 is presenting a Remembering Shel Dorf panel on Saturday, July 24 from 4:30-6:00. One very special member of the panel is Shel’s brother, Michael Dorf. The Comic-Con is very generously hosting Michael this year and we heartily thank them for that. Here is the program listing for the panel:

A group of Shel Dorf’s old friends visited Michael Dorf, Shel’s brother, on Sunday, November 8, 2009, in Los Angeles, California, while Michael was sitting shiva (the traditional Jewish seven days of mourning) for Shel after he had passed away. During the visit, Michael reminisced about his parents, Ben and Sarah Dorf. Fortunately, Michael’s account was recorded and is presented here for your listening pleasure. (Also, a transcript is provided at the end of this post.)

A group of Shel Dorf’s old friends visited Michael Dorf, Shel’s brother, on Sunday, November 8, 2009, in Los Angeles, California, while Michael was sitting shiva (the traditional Jewish seven days of mourning) for Shel after he had passed away. While there, Richard Alf recounted Shel’s memorable last visit with Bill Liebowitz, the owner of the Golden Apple Comics store in Hollywood. Fortunately, Richard’s account was recorded and is presented here for your listening pleasure.

Greg Koudoulian organized another gathering of the Shel Dorf Fan Club and George Clayton Johnson Entourage in remembrance of Shel Dorf and the early years of Comic-Con. This latest event was on February 13, 2010 and was attended by Wendy All and Greg Koudoulian from the Los Angeles area, Clayton Moore from Victorville, and Richard Alf, Anthony Keith, Alan Scrivener, Mike Rossi, and Mike Towry from San Diego.

Links to video and text media coverage of Shel Dorf’s passing and his legacy as Comic-Con’s founder. The links were good as of November 14, 2009. They may, however, not be “permanent” links and may be in effect for only a relatively-short period of time.

Picture of Shel Dorf and his brother, Michael Dorf, with Chester Gould in 1949 taken outside the Gould family farmhouse. The picture is accompanied by an audio clip of Michael Dorf telling the story of the Dorf-family visit to see Chester Gould in Woodstock, Illinois. (A transcript of the recording is included.)

Shel Dorf passed away today, November 3, 2009, in Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. His brother, Michael Dorf, was at his side. His friends and colleagues around the world will miss him dearly. The world is a better place for his having been among us. His example will continue to make it a better place to be.

Shel Dorf’s cousin Donna Horwitz remembers good times with Shel when they were children, his saving of comic strips in scrapbooks, Milt Caniff putting Dorf family members in his strip, Shel’s love of family, friends and San Diego, and his pride and happiness over his “baby,” Comic-Con.

Shel Dorf’s cousin Shelley Horwitz speaks of visiting Shel and his parents, Shel’s homemade greeting cards, and his love of San Diego, comics, and his friends.
